Need code read on 2000 corsa 1.0 zx10e

I am trying to find the reason why my sisters 2000 corsa 1.0 3 cylinder, engine type zx10e is misfiring, the exhaust emissionlight is currently on but i have no means to read the code. I know a garage can do it, but i dont really wanna pay £50 just to have it hooked up. Does any1 have the equiptment to do it, i would be willing to pay towards it, but not £50 quid ...lol. I am in Tadcaster between York and Leeds (North Yorkshire).

I have tried a new coil pack, as i know these are a common fault, but have had no luck. I have been told to also try the Lambda sensors, EGR valve, air flow meter and knock sensor, but this all costs money and time.

half the price of a local diagnostic hook up session but u can carry it round with ya and diagnose all petrols from 2000 (except VAG) and some cars from 96-00 (including Ford)

plug it in - switch on ignition and read the fault code that is displayed on the unit - cross reference it with the booklet provided and youll find the fault the code relates to

Great if u dont know of a DIY method like the one above

** EDIT ** If it comes up with an EGR fault - u may be better off just cleaning the EGR together with the throttle body with a can of carb cleaner

it should work if its a definite Z series engine

If its a X10XE then it wont

In which case one would assume its the earlier model therefore try the paperclip test

actually come to think of it - the Z10 does ring a bell with regards OBD2 readers not working......might just have made that up tho

Either way - paperclip test if its an earlier X10XE or pedal test on the Z10XE

I think it is an x10xe engine actually, thats what the haynes manual lists it as, i think its the Crsa c which has the z series in it, my sisters is a last of the line corsa b

easiest way is look for the cat

if its on the mani its the Z - if its underneath on the front pipe its the X

Corsa B will probs be the X10XE therefore youll need to do the paperclip test

im assuming u know where the OBD port is? (cos i cant recall lol)

bridge terminals 5 & 6 and count the sequence of EML flashes

heres the how-to for the Astra although the principle is the same:
