Intermittant starter motor electircal fault... she's toying with me!

    Hi All,

My first post as an astra co-owner... my girlfriends faithful 1.7TD '97 plate. She's done some miles; 150k+ but still going strong, aside a turbo that now barely spins!

Her latest game is to refuse to engage the starter motor at all.. Ignition and glow plugs are all fine, but then you turn the key against the spring to start there is nothing, no noise, no relay sounds.... nothing.

She's done it to me once when I replaced the alternator, and then next day started fine.

Out on the road the other night in the rain and sleet with the dog she did it again. My girlfriend whacked all the relay boxes in the engine bay and she managed to get the old girl going again.

She did it again at the petrol station the day after... but again with some wiggling she was running again. Not ideal...

So I pulled every relay in the 2 relay boxes under the bonnet, and none of these control the starter motor, and so I conclude the fault must be somewhere directly between the key and the stater..

can anyone tell me to obvious places to look before I start experimenting?

I'd love to have a haynes manual for her, but they don't make one for the diesel... any suggestion on this as well?

    regards to all...

    Welcome Mike

What your describing could either be a faulty starter, a dodgy engine earth or as you say faulty wiring to the solonide

Next time it doesn't start get a jump lead from the battery negative to a large bolt on the gearbox which will bypass any possible faulty engine earth

If it still doesn't start try to get to the starter and test the black/red wire that goes live when the engine cranks over. If you have the live it will end up being a faulty starter

    Thanks for the post bud...
A good plan of action... I will carry all the tools for next time she decides to play games. I need to do some exposing of wires and a general check over too.

just incase I have this wrong... the starter wire in the barrel feeds directly to the starter solenoid which should be on the back of the starter motor...?

or if I have that wrong, what is the sequence of events when you turn the key and where are the individual component locations?

    thanks again...

It's manual petrol, if there is no relay what is between the ignition and the starter then? the car starts with a push start but nothing with the key? no click. Battery is good, 15A fuse is good? Is the starter a pre engaged type?
    Cheers
