Car boiled its guts up !!

My car cooked itself yesterday when stuck in a motorway closure. I had a light appear on the dashboard (I didn't know what it meant, rectangle symbol with a star in it) and then a little later the spanner symbol came on.

Car was fine and running OK, got stuck in a tailback and then a message came up about collant level and then coolant temp, one after the other. Looked at the temp and it was in the red.

Pulled over and released the pressure and then got going with the heater on full blast with the fan and it took most of the heat away from the engine to get me home.

When I was at the roadside with the ignition on the radiator fan was not on (water was still bubbling). This should have been on at this point shouldn't it ??

Any ideas what it could have been ??

Check the fuse box in the engine bay (near battery) as I think the fan fuse is in there.

Get a Tech 2 done as it will store a code if the fan fails to cut in.
Tell me what you've done, not what you're going to!

There is a sensor on the rad which turns this fan on, I would say its this.
Arden Astra GSI - Phase 3.5

    EDS Phase 3.5 288 BHP 340 FT/LB

    Inlet cam and Dbilas manifold.

    ^^^^

    What he said.

In the back of the radiator there may be some wires going to what looks like a sensor.t This is the sensor that switches the fan on. My old (we're talking Mk 2 here) astra leaked very slightly around this and the switch failed.

Hope it's running okay now (after boiling itself)
