    Rumbling sound from the back?

    Hi,
    I have a 1998 Astra 1.6 16v Arctic 2 and there is a strange noise.
When I bought it there seemed to be a sort of rumbling sound coming from the back which happened when using the clutch to pull away and a little when dipping the clutch to brake.
The garage said it was the exhaust and that they would align it before I took it away.
I should point out that I know nothing about cars, however the noise did reduce but now its back.
I am worried that it’s the clutch in its way out. It almost sounds like the car is labouring when it happens (mostly when using the clutch to pull away etc).
Does anyone have any suggestions on what it may be?
    Thanks in advance.
    Alan

sounds like the exhaust, check that the backbox hangers havent corroded and that everything is mounted correctly
Observe the masses and do the opposite

The clutch is towards the front of the car so this noise may not be related directly to the clutch.

I'd get the exhaust checked out (original Vauxhall ones are expensive, if you need one it'll be cheaper elsewhere), if the noise isn't getting louder with speed then that perhaps rules out the wheel bearings being at fault, mine was rumbling very very loud until I got the rear wheel bearings changed.

also check that the heat shields for the exhaust havent come off (they rust around where they are bolted on) and its not sitting loose on top of your exhaust
Probably the ONLY Astra Mk3 sitting on Corsa D SXI rims!
And Now a Diesel on Discs all round!
