    PC component Help please

Last night my PC entered the realm of the dead

    Im now PC less..

Its long overdue and ive needed a PC for a while.

Ive priced a few PCs up and theyre getting quite expensive now. Ive built PC's in the past, so can do it.. but its been a while, so the thing im unsure about is if the components will work together(ie motherboard, ram, cpu etc).

is it worth me building one, or still just buy one?

I need a pc thats probably similar to this detail:

2 x HD for raid(mirror) capabilities.. for backup purposes.
Vista 64bith with 4gb ram (so ive been told, over the 32 bit one)
integrated sound(5.1) and probably integrated GFX card?
Ill buy my monitor seperately, and keyboard etc.
Im thinking Intel core 2 duo, perhaps 2.66??

Looking at ebuyer, because they do a finance offer..

    Any ideas, im kinda stuck!!

    Thanks

    Grab yourself:

    2x 500Gb 7200rpm HDD's (SATA II)
Intel P35 chipset motherboard with hardware RAID capability
There are motherboards with 5.1 audio & GFX too, check them out.
    Intel Core2Duo E8200 - fits Intel P35 (LGA775) boards and is dual-core.
4Gb (2x2Gb) DDR2 8500 - pretty cheap these days, make sure the board (which most are) supports DDR2 and not DDR3 (DDR3 = more £££).

You can prob spec one inc Vista for around £300.

    that sounds alright mate!

will see what I can come up with then. Im seeing some components which are say: intel core 2 duo 2.66 3mb, or 8mb? about £50 difference, is it worth spending the extra?

    Cheers

one thing ill say now before it too late...

    DONT TOUCH VISTA!!!

Keep to windows XP, its abit more complete then that vista rubbish.

processor wise generally you wont notice a difference between either of them in the long term. Save your self the money and go foe the 2.66mhz 3mb.

ive used xp for ages, and vista at work, along with ubuntu. I prerfer ubuntu but it doesnt cater for some things I do need, even with WINE etc etc.

Whats so bad about vista? I always thought it was rubbish, but a few people I know use it now with no problems? so i was warming to it

Seeing as your from staffordshire , i would reccomend using this retailer for the purchase http://www.overclockers.co.uk/produc...php?groupid=43 , they have good prices and are capable of creating some rather good pc's

The "3mb & 8mb" is referring to the CPU's onboard cache amount.

The more it has, the better/faster the CPU is. Cache is rapid access onboard memory the CPU uses, therefore the more that it has access to, the faster the CPU can work. These days, L2 cache is on-die and runs at 1/1 with the speed of the core clock, IE: very fast.

However if you don't intend to use the PC for gaming, video editing or other processor intensive applications then save the £50 and get the CPU with the lower amount of cache, you probably won't notice the difference between the two CPU's but it'll still be far faster than what you currently have.

Also if you see "1066mhz" and "1333mhz", this is referring to the FSB (Front Side Bus) which is the data interconnect used by modern (but not future) CPU's. If you get a CPU with a 1333mhz FSB, then mate it to a motherboard which has a 1333mhz FSB capability, this means the CPU will run faster and more efficiently than if you connected it to a motherboard that was 1066mhz. It would still work if you don't mate them properly but it wont be as fast as it would be if they were a match.
