    Question Idle Help

Had a problem with my car which we thought it was ECU related. sent it away to be tested but they said that there were no problems with it. Got my ECU back and put it back on the car. and it seems to be running fine but idle is a bit low- around 500rpm. i did adjust the throttle cable to compensate for this but it now seems to rev up and down a bit.

Original problem was that the car was cutting out and turning the traction control light on permanently then the car would not start at all.

is there any way to change the idle speed?

    Thanks

Unfortunately the 1.8 is the ugly duckling in the range in that it didnt feature an independent idle control valve on the early X18XE1 from 98-00 as all the other X series engines of the time did.

Instead the ICV was incorporated into the throttle body itself - subsequently a replacement ICV on an other model would cost approx £30 - the remedy on yours in worst case scenario would be a replacement throttle body which comes in at approx £150!!!

Im presuming when you say you adjusted the throttle cable then its indeed the earlier X18XE1 engine - as the later engine Z18XE was electronic driven and didnt feature a throttle cable. 2000 was the changeover year so it could in theory be either.

Now the best thing to do is remove all the air intake plastics and whip off the entire throttle body - soak it in carb cleaner and clean it to within an inch of its life with a clean cloth so its spotless and shiny once again.

Refit and whilst ur at it - remove and clean the EGR valve in the same way. Theres a how-to on cleaning this valve in the How-To forum.

Refit everything and see how things are running.

Another port of call could be the air flow meter - on other models (the ZLET in particular) when the TC light trips its usually a sign that the AFM is goosed.

This could also cause intermittend idling issues.

Id defo recommend the first cause of action tho - as a clean TB & EGR is always a good idea on any model.

If you have no luck here then consider the AFM.

Have u ever had the EML come on?

If none of the above help and the car is basically running fine apart from the low idle it may need to go on Tech2 where it can be reset

well if the EML has been on then grab a paperclip and read the ECU for codes
