Fog Lights (all you need to know)

Hey all, i will post up here the tutorial for wiring up fog lights from scratch.

but in the mean time here is how the fog lights operate.

    this diagram may help:

Basically when you push the fog light button, it sends a signal to the dials (the brain of the car),

which (if been Tech2'd) will send a signal to the fuse board under the bonnet of the car and turn on the Relay (its basically a fancy switch which then connects the power to the fogs wiring,

then hey presto your fogs will be shinning bright!

So in regards to wiring up the fogs,

in most cases the wiring from the light switch to the dials and the wiring from the dials to the fuse board will be there (as its all operated by the canbus system - don't look to into it or you will age dramatically like me... haha)

so all its required by you is:

The relevant light switch with the front fog button.
    A relay
    A fuse
    Fog Lights
    Lots of wire
    Soldering Iron
    Solder
    Female Terminal Connectors
    Earth Connector Loops
Bunch of tools e.g. torx screws etc
    And a bit of patience.

Good start Steve, I want some fog lights like that

What relay and fuse postion do they go in under the bonnet so people can check they have the terminals there already?

    FOG LIGHTS HOW TO

Ok peeps here is the long awaited how to wire up fog lights to the mk5 astra

ok the model i shall be talking about is a Mk5 astra Life model (1.7CDTi)

the life model is the second bottom model so it has nothing not even electric rear windows lol

so i wired up fog lights.

**Disclaimer - I heed no responsibility of any sore finders, burnt fingers, loss of hair due to stress, or premature ejaculation in regards to this mod**

now here is a list of things you will need:

Fog Lights (ones i used are VXR fogs)
    Light Switch with fog button
    Black and Red Cable
Female Terminal Connectors (plus rubber grommets)
    Solder
    Soldering Iron
    Heat Shrink
    15A Fuse
12V Relay (best to get this at your local VX dealer)
    Tools
    Cable Ties
    Black Tape
    Stanley Knife or Wire Strippers
    Earth Connector Hoops
    Tech2 Session once finished

Ok first things first... get the coffee on as u'll need it.

the wiring between the light switch and the dials should already be there so all you need to do for this part is install your new light switch with the functional front fog light button.

next you'll need to remove the front bumper and the Near Side Headlight

*****BEFORE WE GO ANY FURTHER DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL ON THE BATTERY*****

Now take off the cover on the fuse board to reveal all the fuses and relays etc

now you will see 3 torx screws, unscrew these fully.

now take of the cover just above the fuse board where the main current from the battery is fused and there will be a wee bolt to unscrew (10mm iirc)

now once all these bolts and screws are undone the fuse board should just lift off revealing 3 sections underneath, the one that is circled is the one we are dealing with.

now pull this section out of the back part of the fuse box like so:

now if you look at the back of this section it has a purple clip all you do is pull this up and this will release the ports up

here is the 2 wires i wired into the section

looking at the face of the section again here is the 2 ports that we are using, this may be helpful to print a copy of this pic off.

now what you are needing to put into these ports is a red cable with a female connector and grommet like so. this will require some soldering etc to ensure its a proper connection.

now all you do is place the female connector up the port and it should just click into place.
mind and push the purple clip back down again.

now as you see there is 2 wires... no prizes for guessing that one is for the n/s and the other is for the o/s.
What i did to ensure that it was perfect i ran my 2 cables along with the original loom

also cable ties were used here to keep it all tidy.

now giving plenty of room for the connector wire the red cable into the fog light connector, this will probs require soldering again, mines did as i was using VXR fogs which have a different connection compared to normal astra fogs.

now thats the live feed to the lights now you just need to earth the lights
(may be worth while to make a note of what side of the connector for the fog light is for live and which is for earth)

the 2 main earth points which are actually used to earth the fog is wired from factor are:

    next to the air box

and the other is between the battery and the fuse box

now thats the hard part done.

make sure everything that is soldered etc is all heat shrunk or tapped up.

once happy reassemble car, pretty much the reverse of everything.

now all you will need to do now is put in the fuse and the relay

put the cover back on the fuse board and recconect the battery

then take your car up to VX and get it Tech2'd and bob's yer uncle new fogs

If you have any questions in regards to this feel free to PM me.

when i bought this plug it had a black wire and a brown wire iirc.

all i done was the brown wire is for the earth so i soldered my black wire to that and the red wire to the black wire,

i then put heatshrink round each of the wires and then for tidiness i wrapped the whole wire in insulating tape.
