    Turbo replacement

Looks like my turbo is dead, using oil, smoking on idle.
Just wondering if there are any other upgrade turbo's that will fit the z20let other than the VXR turbo.
There seems to be a lot of people ending up with the same problems when fitting a VXR turbo.
Is there any other stronger, more reliable turbo's that will fit without any major modification?

with all these replacement VXR turbo's going pop after a relatively short period im wondering if in many cases theres is more wrong with the cars theyve been fitted to and this is what is causing the turbos to die prematurely....rather than the turbo's being shite....

I suppose alot of people fit the units themselves which could lead to an early death if you do not know what you are doing, I just hope mine does not s**t its self any time soon otherwise its getting rebuilt to a very high standard.

I think its a case of both, the turbo ain't the greatest and then badly fitted where a required level of cleanliness has not been met.

As for some of these turbos sold on ebay, thats a real gamble. 'Removed from my 30 thousand mile Gsi, always left running to cool down after a run, oil changed every 3000 miles etc etc' the advert goes, fantastic.
Then the seller spoils it all by placing the turbo on a shitty gravel/floor which is covered in small bits of crap and debris for the advert photo, how silly .

VXR turbo's go bang as people try to get them to make a lot of power
they will make 240 to 260bhp no probs at all
you can kill them very easy with a lot of boost

in fairness...z20 let turbo can go to 240-250bhp as well...
my first turbo went bang as i didnt know how to look after it etc.
now i got a z20 let from a guy i trust, and been running fine to date touch wood, but been really looking after it...ive got a brand new vxr turbo sitting there as well, but aint going in.
im sure vxr turbos are fine, just take it easy on them...same with any turbo really...ebay turbos though, risky for sure as monty said above
