Yes Linux will do this and more.
Go for something like mint (looks better then ubuntu) http://www.linuxmint.com/

Also has more software then she will ever need.
Also come with the world class open office.org.

It'll work fine for the majority of stuff, but for any websites that need ActiveX plugins to work for enhanced photo uploads etc, Linux based web broswers probably won't cut it. What's the budget? You'd pick up a more than usable Windows laptop for the £300 mark if you shop around and aren't a brand-snob.

    Tut tut tut.

I've yet to come across a website that I can't view correctly on this laptop...I use it for AOC every single day and all my browsing when I'm not working.

I said Linux was fine for the majority of stuff - it is.

But I know of a number of sites and web-based technologies that won't work under Linux (or Firefox on Windows), ActiveX stuff being one of these technologies. Facebook will no doubt be perfect, but some of the newer online photo-printing companies who use IE plugins for their interface may have issues under Firefox/Linux.

For the 'majority' of web browsing, Linux will be more than adequate.

Any website that needs ActiveX plugins.

Find me a website that requires any plugin or technology that I can't get working in Linux

@domino - thats because Activex is not considered a standered technology as it prone to causing malware/viruses on windows based pc's.

Havent had any issues with any sites so far bare the usuall isp problem caused by non fix ip addresses.
