    Whats wrong with my car?

Was hoping someone could shine a light on a problem I've been having with my mk4 1.4. Whenever its parked overnight or somewhere for a long time, one of the back brakes seem to seize up and lock the wheel, so when its in reverse (usually happens in reverse), it feels as if the cars handbrake is on so you need to rev it hard in order to release the brake which causes a loud bang from the release of the brake. But today it happened me when I was driving in the road the car started slowing down even though I tried accelerating, then there was a smell of cooked brakes I think it was so I pulled over turned it off then restarted it and it was okay after that.
    Any ideas whats gone wrong?
    Any help much appreciated

    Cheers

    Steven

When were the rear brakes last serviced?

It sounds like you have rear drums and they suffer from build up of brake dust in the drum,
The truth is always the truth even if you haven't realised it yet...

I'm not sure about the service on them because I only have it a few months and it has been serviced last november. It needs an engine service soon too. I'm glad to hear its not too serious then- the rear brakes hud is very rusty and needs to be painted but I need to remove my side skirts to jack up the car

Easy peasy. wheels off, drum off (might need some perswasion). Give the shoes a light rub over with emery tape. Just spray brake cleaner all over until all the dust build up has gone. Give all the contacting parts a small lick of copper slick BUT NOT THE BRAKE SHOE FRICTION PAD.

And adjust the brakes on the little roller with a screw driver, just give it a few turns and try the drum, until they turn but not too loosly.

What would be the best way to "persuade" the drum on the back off? I've got the same problem...

Could alos be that the handbrake cable is siezed..... When you are servicing the rear brakes check that the cable is free moving.

If you wana back the drum off. You need to rewind the adjuster mechanism. But theres a pin to only let it adjust outwards, you need to move this off the roller
