    1.8 engines

Hi all, we're looking to get an 05 plate Astra estate to go with our Zafira in the next couple of weeks, however, looking into the spec a bit closer I've become confused. I've seen mention of a 1.8 16v engine and a 1.8vvt engine, is the vvt version only on the latest cars? Is there a single 1.8 version on 05 plate cars? Any replies welcomed, thanks.

To my knowledge, your 05 plate (assuming its an Astra Mk5) will have the 'old' 1.8, which is 123bp, same as the MK4.

The VVT (Variable Valve Timing?) is fitted to later Astra Mk5's, although from exactly what date, I'm not sure. These later engines are a bit more powerful at 140bhp.

z18xe on the early 1.8s which is 123bhp.

Newer 1.8 engine which is found in the astra mk5s (newer) is the z18xer engine with VVT (yes it has variable valve timing) with 140 bhp.
