My RWYB 1/4 mile and my new rims!

First things first.... got my new rims

Many thanks to gareth for the swap on my standard sri turbo rims for his penta rims (plus a little cash his way). Fitted them on Thursday and im sooooooooooooooo pleased with the results! Had a litttle problem with it juddering at 70mph but all sorted now (balancing was out).

Well pleased with the rims, but just need to get some coilovers to drop the front a little to get the perfect stance.

ClarkySri-T and myself went up to Santa Pod yesterday for saturday night special and it was a fantastic day out!! Left home at about 1.30pm to got there for about 3pm. The place was packed!!

Last time I was at the pod I was running stage 1 software and achieved a best time of 14.31secs @ 96mph..... I had to beat it!!

Only ever seen 1 astra (mk4 & mk5) go below 14secs so this was my target!! Signed on at 4pm so I was time for some 1/4 mile action!!

Few pics from earlier in the day before I was on the 1/4 mile.

And then we had the crazy fireforce! OMG! Ive seen it many times but it just gets better and better every time you see it!!

And then it was my turn on the 1/4 mile.

    Current spec:

    Stage 3.5 regal software
    VXR Turbo
    VXR Injectors
    VXR AFM
    FMIC
    Miltek Precat
    Miltek Cat Back System
    1.9 Airbox Set-up

My target was 13secs, but I thought I had no chance of getting that low!

First run I had a little wheel spin off the line and also through 2nd gear, but still managed my best ever time of 14.09secs @ 99.22mph!!!! This run was at 16.54pm.

    But still not 13secs

Went again but got no grip through 1st and 2nd gear, so only run a 14.34sec 1/4 mile.

Had a break (some muppet spilt oil) and then had another 2 runs in the dark. The problem now was that the track temperature had dropped and grip was not available!!! Next 2 runs had 14.21secs and 14.19 secs.

I will be able to achieve below 14secs if I was to raise the ride height at the rear and stiften the suspension. The front end lifted so much off the line, therefore no grip!! Got the power, just need the grip for the first 330ft.

Won every 1/4 mile race I had so I was a happy man, and yes I beat the Focus RS

Few pics of the 1/4 mile in the dark

Wicked day out and well worth the trip! Very happy to get 14.09secs but Im still after the 13secs time!!

what you should do is get a set of 16's on the Front to run at the Pod
would give you a better start then the 18's
a set of coupe or sri 16's with some 888's

    still a good time

    Yeah still a great time

Best I did was 14.17 with my 19's on but now got a pair of 16" softstars with 195/45/16 tyres so I have a nice low rolling radius. Plan on getting into the 13's too

Good one on the 14.09 second run mate! My best in an astra was 14.2 (mk4 coupe turbo - tuned obviously!) and had always wondered what it would take to shave it to just under 14sec!

    Correct me if im wrong

wouldnt putting smaller wheels on the car make it slower acceleration?

the rotation would be less distance, meaning goes less distance per rotation of the actual wheel.

    So on bigger wheel's

the more rotation (distance) is covered per one turn

    if that makes sense

    Am i right or wrong?

Nice times tho chap, looks fun day out, im going to have to go back down again for a weekend, so much fun when i was at PVS08.

    Nope, you're wrong fella!!

Although you are correct in saying that a larger wheel will give you more distance covered per rotation.

However with the smaller wheels (or to be more correct, smaller rolling radius) you are in essence lowering the gearing. So although you will get to the end of each gear earlier (at a lower speed) you will accelerate faster. I'm no scientist, so can't explain fully, but all other things being equal, smaller wheels will get better times (unless this means another gearchange before the line, of course)
