In a bit of a pickle with the car

As some may have seen, I recently got a BMW 840. Things are going great with that but due to the nature of the car I was looking for I wanted to get it before I sold my Astra as it may have taken a very long time for the right one to come along.

Then the bottom falls out of the used car market... I've got the 8 series but haven't had much interest in the Astra.

Now I could further reduce the price of the Astra just to get shot but to be honest I'm not really sure how much that's going to help and with temporary insurance and listing costs I've spent almost £200 on keeping the Astra so far.

I guess my other option is to try to trade it in against something that's nice and cheap to run but then I'd imagine I'd get a pretty crappy trade-in price. If I did get another car I could whack the BMW on a very low mileage policy and use the other car for work etc.

    Any thoughts?

Steve sorry to say but you'll not sell the cab for £7k at the moment. Used car market is dead to put it into perspective you can get a 3 year old Porsche Cayenne for < £20k now - thats a £60k+ car new

My point exactly. The thing is I can keep reducing the price until finally I sell but who knows how long that will take. All the while it'll be costing me money. Whereas if I trade in, I'll probably get a crap price for it but at least I can use the new car as a cheap day to day runner and then take more time getting the 840 up to speed.

Your best bet would be to try some local dealers and see whats being offered, but I doubt it will be anywhere near what your currently looking for, given what I paid for a 57 plate twintop the other day.
Really depends on what the bottom line you would take for the car is.

I was hoping you would reply Dave. If you have a trade-in figure in mind for my car then please feel free to PM it to me so I have an idea.

The other thing that I have in mind is that Hannah (girlfriend) was in an accident in June which wrote her car off. She wasn't planning on replacing it until she gets back from her sandwhich year in Spain (June 2009) but I'm wondering if I should trade mine in against her next car (2004ish mini cooper) and run it myself (at my cost) until she returns when I will sell the car to her at market(ish) rate. Maybe that's the best idea although she was really looking forward to going shopping for a new car.

Agreed dave, i virtually gave the vxr away due to being backed into a corner with time and pressing issues - crap but the way the market is you have little choice tbh

Let me know what the cars details are, mileage, age, condition, etc. Ill make a few calls get a rough idea of what the values are sitting at for the mk4 cab.

You could put it on ebay. Let the market decide it's value. If it's going for peanuts just get a mate to bid up to something reasonable.

The last point perhaps sounds unethical but ultimately if someone bids £X for it then they must value it at that and it would have sold for the right price.

I reckon everything should just be sold via some form of autioning process, markets would be much simpler

P.S a dealer gave me a £3.5k trade-in value for my 330 the other day

    Thanks mate, much appreciated:

    Details are:
2003 (03) Linea Rossa Convertibe Turbo
    63,000 miles
Full Vauxhall History (major service/cam belt done last Oct)
    MoT July 2009
    Tax Dec 2008

Probably doesn't make a difference for trade in but it had new discs and pads all round and new front tyres in June 2008.
