Question Computer Question - How to create a list of files or folders

    Hi,

question for you clever computer folk out there (i am using windows XP)

I have loads of mp3 albums which i am trying to sort out into an excel database.

so for example I have a folder called top40albums

in that folder I have 40 sub folders, of albums, named ... eg Estelle - Shine

    currently I ...

open excel and windows explorer side by side
    open the top40albums folder
click on 'Estelle - Shine' once (so that it opens re-naming folder option)
click copy, click excel, click paste

    (see screen dump)

Is there a better way to create text lists of folders ??

I remember the good old days of winamp, it would create an html playlist from your mp3 playlist. you could copy and paste it out. I wanna do that, but with folders not files. (well maybe files too if poss)

    thanks for your help
    Ian

Presuming you have all your music under 1 main folder, eg 'Music', this is really easy.

    C:\Music
    \Rock
    -\Guns n Roses
    -\ACDC
    \Dance
    -\DJ Sammy
    -\ Tiesto

Is this the case? You have a single/drive folder with all the music under it?

If so, you can use DOS to list them all for you

    1) Navigate to your main root music folder (in the example above, that would be c:\Music) in DOS.

    2) Type in the following command:

'dir /s /B /AD > mylist.txt' - this will output a list of directories only to the file 'mylist.txt' You can then import this into excel

If you want file names to be included too, try this:

    'dir /s /B /D > mylist.txt'

well, I had a play with DOS

got it working with 'my pictures' (as a trial run).
set up an excel sheet to trim off the unwanted text from the mylist.txt file.
then thought i would start my music...

start dos, navigate to place all my music is stored .... E:\ (ext hdd)

d'oh lol my school boy error. DOS cant see the ext hdd

I presume this is because you've started up in DOS?

You should still see any/all drives if you drop to a command prompt in windows:

    start > run > 'cmd' > [enter]

    Hi

    no i've only used cmd

it starts up as C:\documents and settings\Ian>

    CD E:\

does nothing, i assume that is the correct thing to type ?

it is an ext hdd plugged in via USB. a quick google showed people with similar problems. something about drivers.

    CD = Change Directory

You're wanting to change drive, so just type 'E: [enter]'
