    will rolling stop rubbing?

i have 18" alloys with 235/40 R18 tires on my sxi 52 plate would rolling the arches stop them rubbing because they are chewing away my tire treat?

It may do, but buying 215/35 tyres would be a lot easier.

Where are the tyres rubbing, on the plastic liners or the actual arches?

Yeah next time round don't by those tires lol, they are far far to big for an Astra

Not sure how much 235/40's cost, but would guess that 215/35's will be cheaper. For the time being you could try trimming back the arch liner to see if it reduces the rubbing.

Is it rubbing front and rear?
Just when corning or all the time?
Does it rub on full lock when turning slowly? (could be rubbing on the inside of the arches if it does?)

It must be rubbing badly to chew up the tyres, as mine rubs on the arch liner when cornering, however its not damaging the tyres at all, just wearing away the plastic liner.
