Anyone help a Yankee makes his 1.8L Astra run a bit stronger?

I'm over here in the States where the Astra just became available for 2008 and it has been a poor seller. So we will likely get very limited aftermarket support.

Mine has a 1.8L, 138 hp, iron block, 16 valve head w/ VVT, NA motor. I assume this motor has been available for some time in Europe?

I'd really like some help in getting some modest hp increases. Somewhere around 160 hp would make me very happy. Is there a basic formula for achieving these hp #'s on this motor? I'd like to avoid the expense and complication of going w/ a turbo.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks so much for your help!

    hi,

the 1.8VVT has been here for a while but there isn't many of the around and still isn't much in the way of tuning options around,

im sure 160 would be acheivable, the standard 1.8 which has 123bhp can be remaped to nearly 140 easily enough with no other modifications so presumably the VVT version could be increased 10-15bhp on its own with a similar remap,

do you have any local companies to you that can make customer maps if thats the route you want to go, or if you want to get the gains purely through engine changed and not software then im not sure tbh, im sure someone will be along soon who has much better knowledge on it than me though

First off welcome to the club, get some pics up of your car when you can

The 1.8 engine is fairly tunable, to get 160 bhp you would be looking at a full exhaust system, larger air intake, cams, remap and possibly sports manifold.

Have a look at http://www.regal-shop.co.uk/acatalog/Astra_H.html for a range of tunning options avaiable.

only really has the Z18XE on there Paul, doesn't mention the VVT version which is already 15bhp up on the Z18XE,

Damn didnt see the VVT part of the post

Exhaust systems etc should be fairly generic.

Not sure how much difference there is between the Z18XE and the VVT version engine wise, sure someone more in the know will be along shortly.

Good info guys! Anything else you guys can share w/ me?

What is the proper way to open up the intake side of this car? Can the stock airbox be modified w/ restrictor removal and a hi-flo panel air filter or will I need to go to a pod filter? Someone mentioned a different intake tube? VX or something?

I've e-mailed Regal to see if I can get some info from them and try and get a bolt on package from them.

I'd be curious about the turbo options although w/ 10.5:1 compression that would seem to be hard to pull off.

I'd be reluctant to do cams as I'd prefer not to touch the long block. The car is brand new after all!

I've also contacted a local distributor who says that he is working w/ Regal to put together a package for USA Astra buyers.

Pic of my white car. It's very hot here in Texas so a white car really helps:

you can open the airbox up easily enough and as you say derestrict it by taking out a couple of bits,
also the pipe you refer to is the VXR one, (the VXR is the top "sports" version of the astra over here and has a larger air intake)
