Temp Gauge - Fluctuating readings / struggling to build temp

My first thought is my thermostat is stuck open.

Recently my coolant temperature's are struggling to get off the bottom marker, and if they do its only due to thrashing / sitting in traffic - then they drop down again.

Have bled the system, and seems ok on that front, only replaced Coolant temp sensor last year.

    Any idea's?

Any easy way to check thermostat - take it off n see if piston is stuck one way or other at a guess?

take it of , put the kettle on once boiled have a jug ready to pour some hot water in it , Tye the thermostat on a piece of string and dunk it in the hot water , should open and when you take it out as it cools should close

Fan kicks in as normal and would expect runing issues with temp sensor fault (as have had that go before)

Fit a new thermostat as it's not much money and to test the old on you need to remove it first, do you really want to refit a faulty one so you can use the car to go and get a new one?

Even if the thermostat is stuck open (as your symptoms suggest) the fan will kick in at the correct temp.

    Is your heater getting warm?

Eventually it does - just takes an age, Thermo on order now anyway so get it sorted either next week or week after (switching jobs so whichever I get it cheaper at )

Much better it being stuck open than stuck closed anyway

    I also think I may have this issue......04 plate 1.4 Astra G

Car struggles to get to temp and needle sits on the bottom of the gauge struggling to move.....eventually after an age it gets to maybe 80 or so but never near halfway.

The interior heat also seems kinda warmish and a little weak almost.

After everything else I've done ....see below

    http://www.astraownersclub.com/vb/sh...d.php?t=375830

I can only think of changing the thermostat.

For what it costs I might as well change it and see how it goes from there........I'll let you know

    Thanks
    Cheers Jim
