As mentioned by Joe' there are a number of things that could be causing your problem.

BUT it is important to sort it quickly, and stop using it.

You'll get a bigger bill if the catalytic converter has to be replaced.
Unburnt fuel (caused by misfires) will kill a cat' pretty quickly.

Hopefully you have someone nearby that can help you.

first port of call in a situation like this is to clean the EGR valve and throttle body - the idle control valve too depending on model and year

    what year is it?

Check the how-to sections for details on the above - all u need is a can of carb cleaner from a local motor shop for about £4 a clean cloth and remove all the built up carbon from around the TB and EGR valve

have u got any engine management lights present?

u could always run a self diagnostics test to see if there is any faults present in the ECU

    Here's how:
98-00 models - use the good old paperclip method: http://www.astraownersclub.com/vb/sh...69&postcount=4
(ignore the other references in this post as its lifted directly from another thread)

00-04 models - use the both pedal method: http://www.astraownersclub.com/vb/sh...78&postcount=2

basically a case of counting the sequence of the engine management light as it flashes which in turn will give a fault code...

Let us know how u get on
