Angry Second RAC callout in two weeks - NOT happy!

Right guys, I need your help. Badly! Both my car AND mums is off the road so I'm screwed for transport!

I was driving home tonight, and I suddenly lost first, third and fifth as well as reverse.

I've got second and 4th. I've checked all the linkage bars and they're all intact and moving fine. It's something inside my gearbox that's either seized or broken.

Is there any chance it could just be a dodgy selector fork or two? If so how easy is it to fix? If my gearbox has to come off I'm tempted to get rid of my car so this is vital!!!

    Cheers in advance chaps.

Could be the linkage needs to be re aligned? It is not too hard to do.

Also, check that you have all your gearbox bolts. I had it happen to me in my Calibra where I came up to roundabout ony to find I could not select 3rd gear. So I had to drive home in 5th!! Turns out I only had 2 bolts holding my gearbox to the engine. Once I had replaced the bolts that the kind Vauxhall dealer had left loose or not put in, I could select my gears again.

check linkage is tight and mark with tippex to see if slipping.

think its a gearbox off job for more serious problems

Hmm yeah. In my Golf A little bolt under my gearstick came loose and I lost all gears bar third and fifth (forwards and backwards) lol. My gearstick is like a c**k in a tophat and has been since I got the car really! I'm gonna try and limp to the garage tomorrow see what he says.

My Son had this happen on his mk 3 astra ,It turned out he had lost one of the bolts which hold the gear linkage to the rear gearbox mounting and the other one was almost out , This only allowed him to get 3rd and 5th I replaced the bolt and tightend the other one after putting some threadlock on them ,Its been fine ever since nearly 2 years now

Sounds like a linkage issue rather than gearbox.
Tell me what you've done, not what you're going to!

yeah it didn't make any awkward noises. Is there any way to sharpen up my gear stick? I've heard buying a 'linkage repair kit' consisting of a new rubber ball for the gearstick and some new plastic bits can make the box feel a lot better. Even when it was working properly it felt slack as anything!!!
