    problems with gears

    before people say this is in the wrong section i have already put it in the correct section but wanting to get the car sorted tonight/tomorrow morning so...................

    My friend has a 1.8 mk4 astra and is having problems selecting gears when the car is running, but when the engine is not running then it'll select the gears,

    any ideas?

    What milage has the car done?

    Where's the biting point on the clutch pedal.

    If it's high, and low. Time for a new clutch. If not.....

    80k on the clock, not drove it yet so i dont know where the biting point is.

    i have the feeling it is the clutch, it just seemed odd that it'll select gear engine off but turn it over and it not select gears

    It'll select because theres nothing moving inside. Try putting it into gear on your car without the clutch. If the engine was running, you'd get the grinding. it does sound like the clutch.
