Unusual visitor to the garden today

Today we had an unusual visitor to the garden.

We live quite close to woods and have seen the odd wood pecker in the trees. Normally when we see them in the woods they shuffle around the tree so they are out of sight.

So to get this one in our garden and manage to take pictures was great.

    Nice spot

Green woodpeckers do spend a fair bit of time foraging on the ground tho. Greater spotteds spend most of their time in/on trees, and Lesser spotteds are very rare these days

Nope but he looked like he was going to have a go at the concreat post at the end when he first flew in

We see one about twice a week at the side of the road (On the way to work) in roughly the same place feeding on the ground.

Nice shots, i regularly get a woodpecker in my back garden but have never managed to get a shot before it has gone.

The other evening i was stood watching a couple of young wood pigeons thinking about having there first flights when a sparrow hawk (i think) landed on my patio table and started to eye up the pigeons. Then suddenly a sparrow took off from a bush behind it, the hawk took off instantly and caught the sparrow mid flight. Was very impressive to see, just wish i had had a camera to hand.
