    Home electricians, need some tips

I would like to fit led rop lights along the inside edges of my stairs which are activated by pressure pads at either end of the stairs, potentially using these products...

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?...=14&doy=search

would like to put a dimmer switch within the circuit to so i can control the brightness.

Has anyone else done anything similair?

Had you considered strategically placed PIR's??

Sam's parents had that on striplights in the kitchen in one of their old houses... plus if you get the light sensing ones, they only come on at night/in the dark

you would be able to use the pressure mat but you would have to build some custom electronics that detected the signal coming from the pad to then turn on and drive the lights.
the pad will not be able to drive the lights but it can certainly can be used to provide a trigger signal

All the hardware you need to do this is available however it is very expensive.
You can buy timer relays that come ready made (just found one to day)
Use laser trips instead of pressure mats as there cheaper.
If you want the expense and simplicity that a little electronics will show you how to achieve what you want.

Laser trip at both top and bottom of stairs activate timer/relay, rope light activates, after preset time T/R resets switching off lights.
    Simple job to do.
