    Decat

Hi, i've got an astra 1.8 sport '99 and ive got a janspeed backbox and a remus middle section which give good performance but not all that with the sound but i've still got the original cat and was wondering if i were to decat it would it sound better?

If i did decat it would i need a special decat pipe or can i use any old stainless steel pipe?

Also would it be more economical on fuel or not?

    Thanks

Welcome to AOC, running it without a cat is illegal, get caught and expect a fine, will also need a cat fitted to pass the MOT.

best to go for a sports cat , i have in mine , removing the cat completely? i would not do it for a no of reasons : mot failure, toooo loud , loos of torque due to not enough back pressure , hasle to have a costum build pipe with flexy section to alow for expantion...

why not have the best of both worlds and fit a sport cat?

OK a brand new sports cat/front pipe would set u back £230+ delivery but u can have my one thats 6mths old.... u will have to modify the flange where it joins the manifold as its intended for the 1.6 8v model or u could just chop the cat out and fit it onto ur existing pipework.

Gains of approx 10bhp or so and yet remaining legal.... wont have to mess around come MOT time - just leave it on and it'll sail through - stainless steel too, so no problems with rusting...

If ur interested check this out: http://www.astraownersclub.com/vb/sh...d.php?t=154769

Or take ur chance with some pipe welded in and good luck with roadside emissions and random police stops!

If get a sport cat or decat do you need to change anything on the ecu as i've heard emissions light tends to come on, on astras.

Does anyone know what engine type i have or how i can find out?

    you have the X18XE1 engine

emissions and/or engine management light will only come on if u do a decat

sports cat is fully legal and no lights will trip

both are direct swaps although most will rightly advise u not to go down the decat route....it really aint worth it

sports cat and highflow are essentially the same

a standard cat is typically 400cpi (400 cells per inch)

most sports cat are 200cpi (therefore only half the restriction of standard)

some sports cats are 100cpi (only a 1/4 of std cats)

A decat may only cost u a few quid to knock up a new pipe out of ur existing pipe but would mean sourcing a correct cat come MOT time.
An option would be to source a front pipe off an X18XE1 (like yours) chop out the cat and replace with a length of pipe and keep ur current one for MOT time

A sports cat is by far the easiest - fit it once - be done with it and no worries about legality and noise regulations etc

Off the shelf decats are available for your model - heres an example - £98 + delivery
    http://www.sportcats.co.uk/product_i...275e53dfe0105c

    Looks like this

But youd still need to fit your own one come MOT time....
