Have you checked all the wireing, this may not have nothing to do with it though.

Burnt smell isn't a good sign

Usually a melted voice coil or a burnt one

the poping is electricity being forced through the sub, this can cause the sub to die or burn out but if its still working dont worry about the sub just yet.
not sure what the cause might be, there are some common causes but im damned if i can remember any at the moment. google it.

    Hi SXI-Vards.
I wonder if the amplifier you have is a pre-owned one?
Going on what you have so far revealed, I deduce you have DC being applied to the Sub.
That certainly would cause the pop, and cause the coil in the Sub to get hot.

Most amplifiers used for the purpose have 2 of them that "Push and Pull" the speaker cone. When no sound is being played, the cone returns to the central position.
In your case, methinks the cone is pushed, or pulled away from the resting position.
If you can get a voltmeter (20 volt DC Range) across the speaker, then turn the power to the Amplifier, it should settle at Zero.
If it does not, that will confirm the Amp' is in need of repair.
