    Do Astras handle....?

After speaking to a few people they have all said that Astra's are very bad handling cars....

Im looking at either a 2.0T or a 2.2 Coupe and just want to know are they are bad as people make out as standard? After taking a 2.0 Coupe turbo out I can't say I felt it was that bad however it wasn't for a massively long B road blast.

After driving a 2.6 Vec B im assuming they can't handle as badly as that can then...?

Fit a rear anti roll bar and the handling will be transformed

    We're talking Astra G yes? (mk4)

I'm gonna get yelled at here, but in standard form the only good handling Astra G (mk4) is the T8 Coupe. (Some will argue that's not a standard car but it does leave the factory as it is).

I had an Astra Coupe Turbo and have driven a GSI & a 1.8 SRI and IMO neither have good handling.

However it depends what you compare it to.

I am comparing the cars to the Focus RS, Civic Type-R & Clio 182.

The GSI & SRI models can't hold a candle to the cars mentioned above. The T8 Coupe is a factory modified example which is why IMO it's the only good handling Astra G (mk4).

This is why so many people lower and change the suspension on the other Astra's whereas those with CTR's etc don't tend to change the suspension. Also CTR's, Focus RS's & IIRC the Clio 182 also have fully independent rear suspension and RARB's as standard too, the Astra G (mk4) and also the Astra H (mk5) do NOT have these features.

True, which is why I advise folk to buy the old breadvan shape.

However Astra G, Focus RS, CTR & 182 ... all the same generation car. 98-04. (ish).

The current CTR is more comparable to the current Astra, if someone is looking at a Astra G then they won't be interested in a £11k + new CTR.

Have to disagree with the general statement. The 1.9 SRi 150ps Mk5 seems to handle rather well - at least better than my previous Focus (pre-new shape). Guess I'm not a 'driving god' afterall.

Correct, which is why I said out of the factory they dont handle well except the T8 Coupe as this comes pre-fitted with the mods u will be hinting at. (Minus the RARB).

Although if the owners of the CTR & 182 do the same mods, uprated springs & dampers, then they take another step away from the Astra's handling.

The Focus RS comes fitted with Sachs dampers and a Quaiffe ATB so although some slate it's handling for being jittery on backroads, (The Astra would be the same with the lowered suspension and ATB) it is still a better handling car and always IMO will be over the Astra G/H.
