Do you not have the original windows xp disc that the laptop should have come with.

1stly mate id try and clean your pc up
    download this and run it

    http://projects.securitywonks.net/pr...e=2&mirror=276

    thats spybot search & destroy

that will at least make you aware of any issues but should mop up most of the bad guys

then youll want something like Registry mechanic
    http://www.pctools.com/registry-mech...=afl_nenextech

    that should streamline your registry

download the demo and run it see how many faults it finds and clear what you can with the free version

if you want the full version then give me a PM and i'll point you in the direction of the serial numbers etc that youll need

once youve done that defrag your system and see how it goes from there

worst come to worst post up you pc make and model as most now come with a factory reset which will .. well .. im sure you can guess what it does

PM me if you need any help good luck

I hate reg cleaners/mechanics with a vengance...I have yet to see them do anything useful...

    But your choice...

Most newer computers/laptops have a hard drive restore method, usually involves pressing certain keys when it turns on to get into the right mode to restore. What make/model is your laptop and how old is it?

    From a quick Google:

"During post press Alt&F10 together, this forces the laptop to self restore from a hidden partion, as long as you have not messed with the drive that is.

Post happens just after you have started the system, and if you find that this does not work, go into the bios and make sure that D2D is enabled, and try again."

John, what symptoms do you have that you suspect a virus or two?

What Anti-Virus software do you currently have installed?

Do you get any strange messages or pop-ups appear?

Have you tried booting in Safe Mode to see if it behaves the same?

sounds like your usb port is buggered or the driver's done a bunk.
Does everything else work with it ok?
fingers crossed it might be just a lead.
