    Diesel or Petrol?

I'd like some opinions on diesel engines vs petrol engines in general? (not astra specific)

I would prefer a petrol car for the performance and sound but the running costs (on a 2l turbo for example) wouldn't really appeal to me. Alot of people seem to be getting diesels nowadays and I know there is cost benefits with diesel cars but with the price of diesel at the moment, is it as beneficial as we think?

I know I'm maybe not being specific enough here in terms of engine sizes but i would like to know peoples thoughts...

diesels are still worth the money if you do enough miles a year for it to be worth it,

some places on the net say at least 15k miles a year and some places say 30k+ a year

You should look at the miles you do, diesel is 15p more than petrol here, so to me it would not make much sense to change mainly becasue i dont do the miles to warrent it, but if you do more mile diesel would be the way to go.

    Personally, I say Diesel.

Ok I am hardly doing the miles to "warrent" a diesel.
But, I like to fill up here, in Hereford (wales) and travel to Essex (Southend) and back, and still have fuel in the tank!

Ok but normal running, I am only doing 70miles a week, which isn't much. But then I look at the reliblity aspect... there isn't much to go wrong on a Diesel compared to a petrol... and god forbid we have floods like last year, least a diesel can go into it, and survive better than a petrol would...

Petrol all the way for me. I would only consider a diesel if I did high mileage and lots of motorway driving.

depends massivly on how many miles you do, and what you want,

diesels (as in the CDTi's) get better early tuing results than most petrols but thats because they are turbos, compare them to a turbo petrol and the petrol has much better tuning potential,

i went for a diesel because i do enough miles for it, servicing costs arn't an issue for me and the intial outlay wasn't a problem,
however i would (if not for the above) always go for a petrol for the main reason of i hate when pulling away to leave the car behind in a cloud of black smoke, i much prefer to pull away in a petrol car no looking like i've left a james bond smoke screen behind,
