    Crunching first gear?

Im not sure if its just me, But at times getting the car into first is very differcult, it seems to have to "crunch in" maybe i just need to smack the clutch down harder, but it also seems very hard to drive in first, when gently pushing down on the accelerator, it almost judders/hesitates when i take my foot off, Obviously more noticable when in heavy stop start traffic, I have cleaned the throttle body and had a new egr valve. Could there possibly be something wrong with the gear box?

    its a 1999 SRI 2.0i

    thanks guys

try double clutching when putting it in first gear, i find it easier when selecting first that way. clutch down, neutral, bring clutch up, clutch down again, first gear, clutch up

I'm no expert but sounds to me like clutch related. Where does the clutch engage, at top of travel or halfway up where is should. Good way to check clutch is put handbrake on and gently try to pull away, see how much bite it's really giving you. Or thrust bearing as said, not sure how that works on the astra, whether it's adjustable or not. Possibly hydraulic problem, does the clutch feel better if you pump it a few times, indicating low fluid or air in it.

I reckon clutch, but like I said i know f##k all really.

Without owning the car from new im unsure, but i will try it, But it seems when im using 1st and 2nd a lot, getting into 1st is much easier. When i first get into the car from cold, it chrunches more.
