    Problem with backlight

    Hi,

I have an Astra MK4 99 and the backlit display (for speedo, feul gauge etc etc) is not lit. I have tried the dimmer switch but it doesn't do anything. I called a local garage and the mechanic said that it is unlikely to be blown bulbs (i'm not comfortable ripping out the dash to replace the bulbs) as they shouldn't all blow at the same time. So I decided to check the fuses. I have looked at the back of the compartment cover (for the diagram) but I can't make out which symbol is for the dashboard. Does anyone know what fuse these fall under?

All dashboard lights are non functioning (including the ones for the heater dials etc). I have checked the fuses, all seem ok. Has anyone encountered a similar problem?

Yes, the fog lights work. When Fuse 13 (I think) was removed, the warning lights (fuel, engine, battery etc) would not light up when turning on the engine. Visually it looked fine. When it was replaced, my friend said that it felt a little loose going in. But if that was the problem, wouldn't the warning lights also not function when plugged in?

So do you have any ideas why the backlights aren't working? I can't see how all the bulbs have failed at the same time. Was that definetly Fuse 13 (does it control all dashboard lights?)?

The diagrams are hard to follow for this as it all goes thought the multitimer which has no internal diagram plus you car is a earlier one that I have no diagram for. I just looked in the fuse box diagram in the sticky at the top that Lee posted

Other problems could be a faulty headlight switch

Just to make it a little clearer...the only lighting that I am having issues with are the instrument illuminations (heater dials, speedometer etc etc). All other internal and external lights work fine. All other gadgetry works fine (wipers, electric windows, central locking etc).
