I have had the EML light on for majority of time i have owned my car - MK4 1.6 8v hatchback. The code from the paperclip diagnosis says its the ICV but i've changed that a number of times now. (There are previous threads i have posted about it also)
My problem is the light seems to come on when its warm and the revs are higher than they should be. They aren't all over the place like most would expect with ICV/EGR problems but it sits around 1200rpm-1400rpm most of the time on tickover. I thought maybe the EGR valve could do with replacing although i'm getting no error code - could be worth a try?
I have been reading threads on here and people have been fitting a blanking plate but with the EGR still connected to the loom to see if this is the cause of the problem before splashing out on a replacement. (i know people blank them off permanently also but i dont want to do that)
When I thought about making a temporary blanking plate, i remembered there isn't a gasket on my EGR Valve and never has been!! Could this be the problem??
- Is it worth getting a new EGR (with gasket)?
- maybe just buy a gasket?
- or does it sound like i'm chasing the wrong problem seeing as there is no fault code for it.
