Look out for blue smoke coming from the rear under hard acceleration. Split or worn boost hoses.
If you are really going to be having a bloody good luck take the hoses off and look for oil in the hoses.

    Good luck Nick.

How could you even consider a Clio

Good choice mate, just the check the usual stuff, and be prepared to buy a new turbo in the future if engine is 60k+ still running the original one.

Also stick the car in 3rd and boot it from 1500rpm all the way up to 6k and check to see if you can feel any flat spots. Not the end of the world if there are any, but will get annoying after a while until you fix them.

    just like mine then!

on a serious note, the turbo is the only expensive weak point! usually do 50-60k before replacement is due. the vxr turbo is cheaper and better. the afm (air flow meter) is another thing that can fail but dont let that put you off as they arent that much! around £80 new!
regarding the gsi or coupe! take both for a drive and see which you like! thats upto you im afraid!!!!

Shit on a stick maybe comparible in terms of performance but the shit is far better built.
