    R.I.P. Stan Winston

    Date of Birth:

7 April 1946, Richmond, Virginia, USA

    Date of Death:

15 June 2008, Los Angeles, California, USA (multiple myeloma)

I was meant to post this the other day but didn't get around to it.

Some might not know who Stan Winston is, for those people, he was a makeup effects artists and special effects artist who worked for many big name directors in Hollywood.

Some of the films he worked as the lead special effects or makeup effects artist are:

    Aliens
    Predator
    Predator 2
    The Terminator
    Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines
    Jurassic Park
    The Lost World: Jurassic Park
    Jurassic Park III
    A.I.
    Pearl Harbour
    Batman Returns
    Edward Scissorhands
    Iron Man
    Small Soldiers
    Congo
    The Goonies

As you can see, he worked on many blockbuster movies and worked alongside directors such as James Cameron, Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante & Tim Burton.

He won four oscars for his work on the following movies:

Best visual effects: Jurassic Park (1994)
Best visual effects: Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1993)
    Best make-up: Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1993)
    Best visual effects: Aliens (1986)

I've always admired his work, the creatures he created and the attention to detail he'd go into.

    He'll be missed.

    R.I.P. Stan Winston

He didnt create the "Alien" in Aliens, that was H.R. Giger but he built the Alien Queen from drawings that James Cameron did.

He created the Predator himself, it was originally going to be Van Damme in some cheap & nasty suit.

He created a giant squid for The Goonies but it was cut, yet he supervised alot of the other effects etc

    He designed the Terminator endoskeleton.

He was the main man behind bringing the dinosaurs to life in Jurassic Park, and they still look damn good almost 20yrs later!!

The man was a pure genius, especially when he collaborated with James Cameron. The Terminator design is excellent.

He was currently working on Termintor 4 & James Cameron's new Sci-Fi blockbuster "Avatar" ... I hope his team keeps up their level of excellent work, I know Jim won't have anything less and neither would Stan.

I might go and see Iron Man since it was his last "finished" work.

H.R. Giger is a legend, a freaky legend but a legend nontheless.

I want one of those Alien models that are made up of motorbike parts, they look cool

Cameron & Winston redesigned the look of the Alien for the "Aliens" movie so that instead of having smoothed dome heads they had ridged heads. Some prefer it, some don't, either way he didn't ruin the series by doing so, AvP did that.

Do... I was suprised by that movie - i went expecting a fairly run of the mill action hero movie, but it was actually pretty damn good.

I'm not a superhero movie fan, didn't care much for the new Superman movie, the Spiderman movies or X-Men etc but I'll see what this one is like since I have an alternative motive to go see it

Well, it sounds like the bloke certainly knew his stuff! And like Scott says, Jurrasic Park does still look good, even after all this time. R.I.P Mr Winston.

(slightly off topic but - AstraKids trivia time. One of H. R. Gigers works, is the cover of an album from a band from the 70s. I am actually named after somebody in the band - and my/his name is in the band title. Any body guess A) The band name B) The album name.) P.S I also love Gigers work......
