    Zafira Aircon noise.

My "new" 6½ year old zafira which i bought a couple of months ago has aircon.

Problem is that over the last week it has developed a "noise" ... sounds a bit like a bearing being bad..

The noise IS coming from the aircon because if i turn aircon off the noise disappears.

Is this the pump about to go south or what ?

Hope not...That part is probably expensive ...

It has done 230.000km's and i dont know for how many of those km's it has had the aircon running ... we have had it on quite a bit because of the summer...

Sounds like it could be the aircon compressor. Not sure how expensive they are, maybe a trip to your local garage to confirm the problem.

That is what i am afraid off..

We do agree that turning on the aircon should not change the sounds inside the car ? .. (I mean....I should not be able to hear that i turn on the aircon except maybe for the raised idle)..

I've got climate control, so I can't really comment on the the sounds that come when standard aircon is switched on, maybe others here will be able to confirm this.

mine started doing that a couple of months ago, I thought oh dear bearings on their way out so thought just leave it until it completely fails. Now as the weather is getting hotter we have noticed that the air in the bus is no where near as cold as in the Astra, so I am hoping that a refill may just fix this before it is too late. I don't know much about the gas in the system but apparently it contains a lubricant. Maybe the noise is associated with low gas levels..... well I hope so anyway

    Exactly the same here..

I dont feel that the air is as cold as it used to be...

But low gas level should mean that the system would not turn on would it not ?

It would be clever if it refused to turn on before the level and lubrication would be so bad that the system would be damaged.

Luckily i am doing a bit of moonlighting for a garage that can do aircon so ill let them have a look at it and tell me whats up..

went to halfrauds yesterday and bought a big can of refrigerant £39.99 with a resuable pressure gauge thrown in and a freebie bacterial killer spray. Also thought I would get an aircon thermometer £9.99 to test the temp. Ran the system as the thermometer instructions said and the temp came out as 44 deg F exactly as it should be. But ran it on the Astra and it came out as 39 deg F. Think a pressure test is required next. Does anyone know which is the low pressure pipe on the aircon?
