Had a really shit day today

First up I couldn't get to sleep at all last night until 3am-ish, as I was so excited. I kept telling myself "I gotta sleep I gotta sleep otherwise I can't wake up in time." and of course the harder I try the harder I get to sleep.

No doubt, I couldn't wake up in time - the alarm clock died! And then when I got onto the motorway, junction 15A was totally jam-packed, plus a few roads were closed. To top it off, BOTH my sat nav systems took me to the wrong place!

So I didn't arrive until about 12, and I was really gutted because I couldn't participate in the AOC Top 15 (scheduled at 10am), and I was really hoping for the "shiniest" award, as I spent 4 weekends (a whole month) detailing the car for the show... that's the whole car polished with #80 + SRP + EGP + Collinite + Gold Class, plus wheels/exhaust polished and tyres dressed, even the engine bay.

So anyway I went and bought tickets for the drag stripe, which means that I had to use the ****ing stupid gravel track. And the shittest thing happened... a sharp stone (what I can only describe as a "ninja throwing star") punched right through my low mileage Yokohama Parada 2... And I don't have a spare wheel, because the rolling diameter is too different to my current wheels and the car is too low to jack up.

Oh and now my just-polished car has about 2000 stone chips because of the stupid gravel track.

Managed to buy a tub of Tyre Weld from a VX220 owner after two hours of panicking... only to find that I can't drive at more than 30mph if it is used... For a 160 miles trip, it is not really possible. Luckily (relatively) the RAC gentleman managed to plug the hole temporarily, so that I can drive at 50mph, which is much better than 30mph...

It means that I cannot get onto the drag stripe, which I waited a whole year for! I worked a whole year on the car, and every time I work on my car I dream of shaving a second off the time at Santa Pod from last year. I kept telling everyone around me "this is the day", "it'll be worth it", etc. Gutted is not the word.

Drove at 50mph all the way, and stopped at every service to check/re-pump the tyres. And I only just got home now...

PS. Big thanks to everyone who has helped! And AOC is organised really well, well worth the best stand title!

I can sympathize with you wywywywy. My day didn't got to plan either.

After a strange de-tour to get to "The Pod", we joined the queue over 1 mile away from the entrance, and sat.

While in the queue the LC started to idle at 2000k so it didn't take long for the "nice" smell of burning clutch entered the car.

The engine started to get warm, so the viscous fan kicked in to cool it.

However, this wasn't enough and the cap on the header tank was the first thing to give way. A small waft of white steam through the offside bonnet vent, then lots of white steam.

So i caused mayhem in the queue as everyone had to go round me (and my mate who stayed with me) as i slowly undid the coolant cap to release the pressure.
Thankfully a Pod member of staff was passing and stopped. Realised he couldn't help so called the Nice bloke in a Land Rover to tow me in.

Thankfully i had some water, so topped up the coolant.

This is where the day got worse. I'd managed to pull a vacuum pipe off a vacuum solenoid.
This solenoid trips when the engine is switched off and keeps coolant running round the block/head to cool it. If this doesn't happen there's a strong chance the head will crack!

I HAD to refit the pipe before leaving the show.
Here lies the problem, the pipe needed fitting into a 3mm hole about 1 foot down the offside suspension turret, behind a network of coolant pipes.

The blue pipe in this pic. Note the strut top at the top of the pic.

Tried not moving the chargecooler but just couldn't get down far enough.

So, engine in bits, arm up to my elbow into a very tight gap, trying to insert a pipe into a rubber connector. Took well over an hour, three of us tried. managed to avoid Dougie from Total Vauxhalls camera lens, very nearly didn't tho. Surprised i've not seen pics of me in my engine bay, as i had a few taken.

To add to it all, as i drove to the stands, my petrol light came on, so i was towed off site to save fuel and remove any chance of over heating again, then managed to get to Tesco and refuel.

They're a dream to drive, but a ******* when they go wrong.

Out of the three Lotus Carltons at the show ALL THREE of us had problems.
One had a flat battery because of the viscous fan running while queuing.
The other dumped most of it's engine oil on the way home, thankfully being caught in time, and someone met him with some more.

Not a good show for the Lotus Carlton.

    Unhappy

    Keif/ wywywywy,

I sympathise for you both!! That is really bad luck!! I would have helped if I had known as got a full load of tools on as I was planning on running, but resided to showing on a traders stand and enjoyed watching.

It was nice to see the LC's out though!! Love those cars! A truly respected, legendary vehicle.

As other people have said, there will be other shows (I realise it's probably not what you want to hear); and with the AOC, help is always at hand!!!

Congratulations to everyone who showed on and organised the club stand, Best Club stand at PVS 2008!!!!! Lisa GT and I pipped and cheered as it was announced by Mike Brewer, got a response out of him for it too!?!?

Already looking forward to the next one and I wish you guys better luck for then!!!

    Cheers!
    Kind regards,

    Russ
