    Hope someone can help....

I've recently bought a second hand astra 1.7tdi estate X reg. Its a great car but we have had a couple of problems with it and wondered if anyone can help? When motorway driving at about 70mph it suddendly loses power, like you have taken your foot of the accelerator and then put it back on again. A light comes on the dashboard and there is a puff of black smoke from the exhaust. It is temporary but quite scary at the time. It has been doing this more and more lately.

Second problem, the alarm keeps going off intermitantly. Very annoying as I am having to leave the car open.

Last problem the air conditioning doesn't work!

Alarm could be your powersounder dieing, try a search on it

Air con may just need re-gassing? Does it work but not get cold? Or just not work at all?

    Welcome to AOC BTW

The gagage said it was something to do with the sensor on the window, but they tried to fix it and it's still not working.

The aircon light comes on but it doesn't get cold.

Any idea about the loss of power?
    Thanks for your help
    Jo

The black smoke out of the exhaust means that your engine is running rich, too much fuel going into the cylinders and not being burnt, or at least i think so, that would also i believe cause the power loss. Im not sure how you actually fix that as it could be a number of problems causing it.

I would check the oil for a start.
I would then service the car if it hasnt been recently serviced.

DO you only get this smoke at 70mph? or do you get puffs or smoke when u rev the car? Might not be running rich but thats what it sounds like. Could just need the valves altering if there not running rich.

After i checked the oil and serviced it, i would have it put on a diagnostic kit as there is many things that could be causing it to run rich, if that is the problem. Ie Sensors, ECU, injectors.

HTH dont quote me on it though lol.

Oddly enough my 1.3cdti 57 reg car is doing the same although it's regardless of what speed of gear i am, it's going into Vauxhall Monday, i'll keep you posted with what they find out, if they find anything mind as I get no warning lights, so they don't have much to work on.
