    Which road to travel . . . .

I,m pretty happy with the out side of my car at the and now turning towards giving it a little more poke under the bonnet.

    The engine is a 1.6 16v mk4 astra sport . . . . It has a k/n pannel and s/s cat back on (More for styling).

What path should i be looking to travel now with engine mods ? ANY help would be welcome

Depends how much cash you want to spend. Here is a couple of options,

Full exhaust system, Cam's + remap
    Diblas Turbo conversion
    Throttle Bodies
Or a full engine swap with a Z20LET or Z20LEH.

Few options for you, but like said depends on budget and how much power you want?

I think these might be a bit too far out of my price range , i go on too many holidays

    Full exhaust system, Cam's + remap . . . . . .

Cam's ? what sort of cost ? where would i see the improvment ?
Remap . . . i guessing you mean remaping the ecu, whats the cost here ?

Sorry engines not really my thing , but ready to learn

Not cheap Remap will be £250-£500 depending where you go.
Cams, not sure on cost but you will want them before the remap so they can be written into the map to get the full potential out of them.

Only looking at about a 10-15bhp increase though.

There are other options aswell like better exhaust manifolds, Diblas inlet manifolds etc. But again all expensive for quite a small return in output of power.

Exactly tbh, I would leave it as it is, as if you tune what you have you will spend a fortune for not much return, and the price you can pick a turbo coupe up for you may aswell sell yours and buy a turbo for less than it will cost you to mod yours!

Just enjoy yours until you can afford something with more power IMO!

Saturday morning i went to view a engine . . . . it was 2.0 sri . Bad points was it had 85k on and service history only up too 40k, did get to see running but was a little bit tappy . . . . . i'm guessing because it not been serviced prob.

If i found the right engine at the right price . . . what sort of cost for a change ? would the gearbox also have to be swapped

I was looking for a new car at the start of the year and i have a lump tucked away for a new car if i fall in love (with a car) . . . . used car market is just so hit and miss and fuel cost so much these days . . . . going fast is not cheap any more

The inlet manifold is the most restrictive part of the system in these 1.6's. But this will depend on what option you go for. If your going for a turbo conversion then I wouldn't bother with this. If your not going to turbo it then start looking at the performance inlet manifolds. www.sbd-dev.co.uk

If your going to turbo it or you've done the above then you want to sort the CAT out. Either purchase a 4-2-1 Lexmaul manifold for an X engine as opposed to a Z engine, generic sports CAT or buy a performance CAT for your current manifold layout.

After that then some head work or cams would be the next thing on the list.

    Then turbo or throttle bodies.
