Well hopefully the headgasket won't blow !! Seriously, there is no given mileage for headgasket failure, it can happen on any car at any time ( not just certain makes ), depending on whether the engines been overheated etc. As when buying any car check for signs of water in the oil or oil in the water, make sure the cooling fan cuts in by allowing the car to idle, cooling fan should cut in around half way point on the temp gauge.
The only thing to make sure of on the these engines is timing belt kit and water pump change, should be done every 40,000 miles.

Ok, thanks, i have a mk3 and they reckon head gaskets go around 70,000 miles.

Ive just been and bought a Mk4, 02 plate 63,000 miles, full service history etc, 1.6 Club, should be picking it up mid week.

I modified my mk3 slightly but i dont think i'll do much to the Mk4. I lowered the mk3 and stuck alloys on plus a few other bits like de bumpstripped it etc.

also them engines leak oil from the headgasket aswell! so just have a look around that area for oil!
