What to look out for on Astra Mk 4?

    Hi.

I've had Mk 3 Astra 1.7 TDis with Isuzu engines for the last 7 ish years. My other half's offered to buy me a Mk 4 so I'm going to let her.

I'm going to look at a 52 plate 2.0 DTi Elegance with 100,000 on the clock tomorrow. Is there anything particular I should be looking for?

one thing i was told when looking for my car which has high milage is to check out when the timing belt was last changed as it can be quite an expensive and lenghty job.

also a full serive history is a bonus for piece of mind

look for rust in the wheel arches, the usual really, and they are prone for cracks in air con pipes

Welcome to AOC. There is a thread somewhere (try the Astra Active forum) detailing just about everything to look for you can imagine, well worth a read!

Thanks. I can't see anything in the Astra Active forum but I'll have another ferret around later. It's reputed to have a full service history which is a good start. As far as I can tell, they're all galvanised so rot shouldn't be a problem and the 2.0 DTis got a chain not belt. I don't suppose I'll be able to identify the aircon pipes to start with, never having had a car with aircon, but I'll have a look.

Not much goes wrong with those motors. The DTi is solid as long as you stick to decent service intervals, and stick to good diesel.

Rusty rear arches, dodgy front ARB bushes and links, and check the rear discs aren't knackered.

    No more supermarket diesel then...

Rear discs. That's going to come as a shock. I haven't had a car with discs all round since a Mk2 Jag over 30 years ago.

Either "real" diesel, or stick in some additive to supermarket stuff.
