    Safe to buy?

Ok, well i kinda jumped the gun when i joined this site and made my username but to cut a story short, I applied for a loan which was accepted today and have had my eyes on an Astra SXi (1.6 16v, W reg)

The mileage is 105k, likely to be a problem?

I need to find someone who knows wot to look out for to go with me when i goto see the car (probs someone from work unless anyone on here is local and happy to come and look)

i went to see it the otherday and looked in good nick, but with not knowing if my loan application had yet been accepted i ddint bother asking for a test drive - didnt really have much time on my hands either

here's the ad from autotrader (the bonnet closes fine btw lol):

just remember when you come to sell it with 120K+ miles on it 99% of the car buying public wont touch it and dealers will offer about £200 as a trade-in

Hmm...I got offered £750 for my 306 D-turbo with 155,000 on the clock against my Astra...then sold it to 'the public' for £1250...

105,000 is going to be OK providing it hasn't been ragged and has a full service history imho. My 2002 SXi 1.6 16v is pushing 123,000 and so far so good...yeah things go wrong on occasion but that is as much down to age as the mileage.

If it doesn't have a provable service history then don't touch it. If you plan to keep it for years but put loads of miles on per annum yourself then I'd be tempted to steer away aswell. If you're only going to add 5-10,000 per annum then it's hopefully good for a fair while yet...don't sue me though!

^^^^^ as above. If its been looked after well then it could be a cheap car to run into the ground but you're never gonna get much of a return when you come to sell it. Check the obvious like service history and any advisory on the most recent MOT. Defo worth taking someone on the know with ya to look at it as with that sort of milage could be a potential money pit.

Also Im sure half the people on this site will correct me if im wrong but didnt the sxi come with alloys?

108k here. No problem. Just make sure that the cambelt was changed recently. It's good to change it every 40-50k.

Personally I think it is overpriced at £1795!!!

I know it's Trade and you will get a warranty..... but you have CASH
I would say around £1400 - £1500 is a fair price for the both of you.
Haggle and barter all the way if this is the car you want!!!!
Make sure you get some extras thrown in as well (Road Tax/Mats etc)

As for mileage I can't comment.......
Like the other guys have said you should check the Service History/Receipts.
But most importantly check the Cam Belt has been changed recently.

Oh and they are Alloys fitted on it.... just early ones (tim1547)

7000 per annum should be nothing, just service it annually, maybe oil every 6 months (low mileage is not always a good thing if you do lots of short journeys, oil works better when warm) if you want too.

Makes no mention on the ad of service history though?
