    EGR valve + sooty plugs

I have an Astra 1.6 8v club 2002. My engine managment light has been going on and off for last couple of years, some times its on for a day and then off for a few weeks, at one time it was on constantly for six months. My Brothers got his own garage so he put it on diagnostic and it said EGR fault.I have never had any problems with running of engine, if it wasn't for light you wouldn't know there was a fault.Only thing is when I have my car serviced the plugs are extremely sooty, could this be because of EGR vavle not working properly ?The other thing is my Astra uses a lot of oil. I haven't been scientific and worked out how much and after how many miles, but it does need topping up quite regulary.I have heard about a cpu upgrade, but as my car isn't showing any running problems is it worth doing ?

Seeing as its the Z16SE engine Im fairly sure theres a upgraded map available from the dealers where they wipe the EGR from it - so the ECU no longer searches for the EGR or something along them lines!!!

Personally Id just replace the EGR as they are fairly cheap to come by - all depends how much the updated map will cost ya

When my EML came on a few years ago with the EGR fault I never had any running problems - but a replacement one cured the light and its never showed again.

But do you think the faulty EGR valve could cause the plugs to be carboned up ?

My plugs look like no3, temp gauge does show just over 80 degrees, but I had a new thermostat put in last year.
