    Temp Gauge problem? please help

Hi all, i'm new in here, so i look forward to speaking with you in the future.
    Anyhoo, he's the thing,
My temp gauge seems to be duff, while the car is stationary park up with engine running, traffic jams etc... temp gauge rises to half way, no more, has never went to red, i've never had the cooling fan running!! as soon as the cars traveling above 40 mph for example the needle drops to cold, surely there can't be that much air cooling my radiator!!

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

    Thanks for the welcome,

just goes up slowly, as it normally would on any other motor. Never had a mk4 before, it can sit still running for ever & never goes above mid point, could this be a faulty thermostat?

    Cheers

what year and engine have u got?

If its the 16v motor then u can easily pop in a new stat - 8v models need disassembling more to get to the part in question....if however its an 8v id bet my last buck on it bein a dodgy stat.

new stat, coolant flush and refill is always a good idea in anyones books

I had the same problem as you. My car was also drinking alot of fuel due to over fueling. It's a dodgy thermostat valve. Vauxhall want £36 just for the part, but a local garage supplied and fitted the part for £48 and now my car is running fine

51 plate 1.8i 16v SXi, it's not really drinking any extra fuel, i don't think!!! got it booked in for a timing belt & waterpump on friday, so it'll have to wait, can't afford a thermostat as well!!

Where you got it booked in?

If its at Vauxhall then cancel - book it in at a good independent garage - get the stat changed as well and it'll still be a damn sight cheaper than what Vx planned on charging..... then again changing the stat on ur engine is only a 5min job so can be done at a later date when fundage allows

I live in Alnwick, so got it booked in with a mate, i trained as a deisel fitter when i left school(long time ago now!!) so made a lot of freinds in the trade. I noticed the stat is kinda just stuck in the front of the head, so will do it in a few weeks when i recover from the work done to it this week. My vauxhall dealer is really good, know most of the crew in the workshop, but still don't like there prices!! they quoted me 185 notes for the timing belt work alone, getting them both done for that at the indi garage.
