    43mpg on 1999 1.4 Opel Astra - Happy Days

Filled the tank up there this morning and was happy to calculate that I managed to get 43mpg doing normal 30 mile round commute to work each day, 50/50 spirited and normal driving.

The car has 120k miles and this is the best I have ever got from it.

Why is it that in the summer you get far better mpg than the winter.

The only really difference is that in the winter I have the temperature gauage in the red to keep the car warm and might turn on the fan every now again. Surely its not the cause of the mpg dropping to 35-38 during the winter.

the air is colder in winter so more air/fuel enters the engine. The car should perform better on cooler days then hot ones.

Am just happy that the car is still performing on level par with VX's figures.

The only thing I have to work out is how to stop the whole bloody car from shaking at 60mph.

I have cheap tyres on all fours so I am going to replace them with proper rubber to see if that helps as I have been told that cheap rubber can not be balanced properly.

cheaper rubber usually requires more wieghts to balance it out. It migh tbe that one of these weights have come off. or one wheel might be buckled.
