    Gear full of neutrals

ok so my car is broken and it looks like its going to be sold for parts, but before i get rid of it i want to make sure its not repairable... well worth repairing..

It seems asif the gearbox is gone but i showed my dad and he wondered if it might be the drive shaft linkage?? I think thats what he said.

You seem to have a box full of neutrals however if you fiddle around with the gearstick you sometimes seem to connect to a gear and if you are gentle on the clutch it may even move the car abit.

    Any help appreciated.

I'm in no way mechanical or know what to do with these things but my mate had a Corsa with a similar thing, but it was 3rd, 4th and 5th gear he couldn't get into. Had something to do with the ball bearings in the gearbox not really helping but meh, could be the same thing

I wouldnt waste your time worrying about the box, don't know what you drive but you should be able to get a second hand gearbox from £70-£120, so its easier just to replace it than fix it.....

If it wont go into gear with the car standing, I would guess that the syncromesh has gone or something internal anyway.

It may sound like a daft thing to say if your not very mechanically minded, but removing/changing the gearbox is quite easy especially if you have a few spare hands to help.

That said, if you source a good gearbox with a warranty from the breakers, a garage shouldnt charge a lot to change it over. If it were me I'd stick a new clutch on while the box was off.

    food for thought though
