    Exhaust gas circulation valve

A while ago i posted on here with troubles i had with my management light showing. Well i managed to get a guy at a nationwide test centre to scan the codes (which it pulled a good 10 or so) and then clear the codes off... now when i try to get the problem to re-occur low and behold the management light comes on.. after looking the code up (0400) it appears to be the Exhaust gas circulation valve (according to here)

I was wondering if any kind soul could tell me the different between: -

Exhaust gas circulation valve - 0400
    Exhaust Gas Re-circulation (EGR) valve - 0403

the EGR valve we took out and cleaned so wouldn't expect it to be this?

p.s. the egr valve was cleaned out with a "plentyful" amount of carb cleaner, however if there is a better method, would appreciate that to.
and also when cleaning it out there is a star bit on the underside of it which is sprung loaded, could this have any bearing on it?

You can test the Egr by Removing it, making sure it is plugged in and switching the ignition on and the piston will move down then go back up again.. This will confirm if the valve is working..

I have a 2.2 and removed the Egr and fitted a cheater drives much nicer without it..

After running the car a bit more and fething a couple more codes, it does appear to be the egr valve..

So, when you reffer to the piston, do you mean the bit which looks like a torx screw which is spring loaded?

and i might be sounding a bit simple here, but what is a cheater?

    Thanks

Cleaning the egr valve does not always cure the problem, you may well have to replace it, if this is the code that keeps coming up and bearing in mind how common faulty egr valves are, i would replace it
