    Time for a new battery?...

I have a 2002 Astra 1.8 SRI with just a couple of niggles, the steering wheel will occasionaly start to squeek and feel slightly heavier when turned as if the power steering isn't working correctly. Also sometimes the lights (both interior on tacho etc and exterior) will dim slightly , however if i rev the engine they seem to brighten back up they also dim occasionaly if i use the electric windows, any idea what could cause this, maybe my battery is on its way out? No problems starting it as yet. Any help would be great

    could be battery and/or alternator

72 amp go battery from vauxhall is £39+vat trade or about £55+vat retail

still a fairly good price for the capacity

a 120amp alternator is the biggest u could go using standard OE spec for the astra G but bigger diesel variants are available.

Various garages offer free checks on batteries and alternators so maybe worthwhile having these checked out.

OE Vauxhall batteries are normally very long-lived but the odd one does fail early in life.

Obviously get the battery and alternator checked but also check the tensioner for the auxilliary drive belt - if that goes "soft" it'll allow the belt to slip - check all the earth straps and battery terminals - any of these could give the symptoms you describe.
