    1.8 140bhp 36.2mpg or 1.9 120bhp 40.9mpg

I need an automatic astra Sri sporthatch, which one would be the best option? (1.8 140bhp 36.2mpg or 1.9 120bhp 40.9mpg).

It's not an awful lot of difference in the mpg figures you've given, so on that, I say go for the petrol 1.8. Diesel is also more expensive

More power and you'll even be able to open the windows on a nice day without it sounding like a tractor at the lights :-D

On the flip side, will the 1.9 not have more torque and be more flexible?

Really depends on if your ca afford the extra cost and whether you feel that it warrants paying the extra.
Personally Id say go for the 1.9, its a far superior engine to the 1.8 petrol.

As the mpg are near the same i would go for the one with more power. However its your choice as everyone said, what the wallet allows, and which do you feel will suit you best.

He's looking for an auto, so the advantages of diesel are moot. Go for the 1.8, it's cheaper and easier to service and fuel.
