    Car Polishing Machine

Can someone please explain to me why a car polishing machine such as this:

    http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/polish.../prod_409.html

costs almost £100 more than this:

    http://www.screwfix.com/prods/24392/...4J5SCSTHZOCFEY

Both are basically the same, one polishes in a rotary fashion, the other sands in a rotary fashion. So the basics of each machine is probably very similar, just with different connections, one for sand paper and the other for a polishing pads.

Meguiars probably dont make their product, they just stick their name on it, and I'm sure the people who do make it wont be as reputable as a brand such as Bosch (which the orbital sander is made by).

    Anyone?

Agreed Scott - it's basically just a £20 angle grinder with one of these on it - http://www.tritontools.co.uk/osa001-...al-sander.html

TBH the parts must come to around £60-70 tops (retail), and the rest is just paying for a 'name'

I'd thought about this one myself on more than one occasion. I've got a Black And Decker random orbital sander in the shed, and I've been wondering if it might be suitable for polishing. The Megs polisher does have a huge head on it compared to my B&D and the Bosch one you're looking at, but that's the only real diff I can see. Like you say, they work the same mechanically.

I'd imagine someone more knowledgable will be along shortly

    EDIT: Ahh, there he is

Massive in car polish. Ask 5 randoms on the street of various ages, "Do you know what Meguiars is?" and "Do you know what Bosch is?" ... Bosch make a variety of quality products found in many many stores, Megs make polish found in a few car outlets.

I still dont believe Meguiars actually make that polishing machine, I think it's a cheap (?) brand with Megs name on it to boost the price.

I wonder what would last longer, a Meguiars polishing machine or a B&D/Bosch orbital sander... almost the same internals, but which if of higher quality? the £69.99 Bosch or £149.99 Meguiars ......

I know what'll last longer, and I cant believe they make people pay that much for such an item!

    Disgusting.

i think its the distace it moves side to side on the orbit the megs one will probly have a much bigger orbit than the other so less heat is involved hence why the orbital ones are safer than normal rotory

THere both designed to do a job... one sanding and one polishing!

The sanding wheel will spin far to fast causing the abrasived to be smashed to pieces instead of breaking them down correctly.
The G220 is a good piece of kit. I have the Porter Cable, and see no need to buy a G220 as they're basically the same but the G220 is bslightly better IMO - 240v and a nice D handle on top.

    *EDIT*
Incidentally im not sure how you would attach a backing plate to the sander! So you would have nothing to attach a pad to!

So Megs attaching a backing plate and the fact it spins slower makes it worth almost £100 more?

I'm sure Bosch/B&D would have a really difficult job making it spin slower ...

Afraid they really did design it! Agreed its probably made in asia but so are most tools!

Its based on the Porter Cable 7424, this was the market leader in orbital polishers for years. But for us Brits it wasnt so good because we had to import them and get a 120v transformer. But the new megs polisher has a better handle on the top and is 240v.

I also think you can probably get the best combo with all the megs products, especially for a beginner.

    G220 Polisher and backing plate,
    Meguires Cutting, Polishing, Finishing Pads,
    Meguires #83, #80 polish
    Meguires #7 Show Glaze

Just dont put Megs #16 wax over the top, I dont rate it!

I really do rate most megs products as they do a fantastic range, especially they're professional range.

....btw im not a megs rep or anything
