could my fuel pump relay be on its way out

my car has been playing up for some time
but today it has had trouble starting, turns fine but dosent fire.
Usualy when i turn key without starting car you hear the fuel pump come on for a about 3 seconds then goes off
but when the car wont start i notice the fuel pump relay keeps on making a noise and dosent stop.
Could it be a relay if so where would it be located or do you think it could be the pump itslef.

Funny, was going to query the fuel pump and related in your other thread...

Is it the fuel pump you hear or the starter motor? Twice in the lifetime of my car I have started it and the key seemed to get stuck in the ignition without dropping back a little to the normal resting position when the engine is running. This left the starter motor engaged which made an unusual noise. Just had to manually drop the key back to the correct position and all was well.

the noise is at the back of the car and im almost possitive its the fuel pump making the noise. You dont happen to know wher the relay is to check that first do you.

My Haynes manual (Astra & Zafira 1988-2000 R-W Reg) states:

'The fuel pump relay is located in the engine compartment main relay box'

Unless your car isn't within the range above in which case they may have moved it.

the fuel pump itself is in the back of the vehicle so could be the pump itself making the noise i guess
