Dell - Core2 Duo (Pentium based processor major benefit for Vista), 2GB RAM (2GB minimum for Vista in my professional opinion!) and 160GB HD for £399 delivered last time I looked. My wife has one, lovely machine, 15.4" widescreen, DVD-RW, full works, Vista Home Premium.

Never heard good stuff about Dell's when it comes to upgrades/repairs, aint they a sealed unit and only Dell will touch them?

Also, the laptop in the link i posted is 2GB isnt it?

The spec above is great, identical almost to the Dell I suggested.

Always bought Dell myself, only bought Dell for home use, would buy for work use (IT Support etc) but we have reasons to buy a different make so stick with them.

All laptops are specific, you'd have to send any back for repairs direct to the manufacturer anyhow. You can upgrade RAM/HD yourself though, nothing is fixed in for that - some screws out and away you go. Same goes for Dell or otherwise. Had need to send my Dell laptop back for warranty repairs years ago and had no issues at all.

I had to get my DVD rewriter repaired few month back.
Sent laptop away had it back within a week. Easy!

I'd rewcommend the one priced at £379 or £399 if you want to spend full price i'd probably buy the one at £399

All laptops are a specialist job to work on. If your buying to use as a portable computer consider a battery upgrade. Ive got 2 Dell laptops and the 6 cell battery upgrade was a great buy. You can upgrade memory yourself very cheaply. Extra office software from Dell is very expensive - dont buy stuff like that. I have had Dell laptops for a couple of years, best gifts I ever bought the kids (too old to be called that but what else?) for the ammount of use they get.

Dell are probably the easiest laptops to work on (i would say this being a dell engineer) parts are pretty easy to get for them and are a lot cheaper for parts also when they break, i would also recommend their extended warranty, their next day on site warranty is superb and well worth the money if you plan to keep it for a few years.
