    handbrake electrical problem

hi i have an astra 1.6 8v club i was having some problems with my electrics
the intermmtent wiper started acting up i got an other motor from the scrapyard but that stopped working i changed the fuse but it just blew again

plus i dont know if they are related but about the same time my handbrake light on the dash came on it started to flicker on and of and about 24 inches of the wire that goes to the handbrake lever melted i replaced it and it melted again so i unplugged it the red light on the dash is still flickering on and of it is still unplugged

    check ur brake fluid pronto!

the light doesnt just indicate the handbrake usage......its also a low brake fluid warning light so check this asap.

what feature of the wiper was at fault? was it solely the intermittent wipe? if so id have just replaced the stalk or maybe the relay.... certainly cheaper than the motor

    handbrake

Hi geordiebandit thanks for your reply i have checked the fluids they are okay
and as i said the wire going to my handbrake just burned out so i dont know if they are related and the light is on all the time now.

The problem with the wipers started with just the intermittent wipe but then the wiper stopped working altogether with both motors i was wandering if i have a short im sorry i never said before but the the motor i replaced was with with one from the scrapyard.

For the handbrake wire to burn out it needs to have a live going up it so when the handbrakes on it shorts out. I have no idea where that problem could start though and very much doubt they are related

Unplug your new wiper motor though and replace that fuse and see if it still blows/ what works and doesn't

    handbrake

thanks i tried that before and everything else was ok so it must be a faulty motor.

can the handbrake problem possibly be down to switch being faulty if so is there a way i can test it without plugging it in and setting fire to my car
    lol

Handbrake wouldn't be a faulty switch, the handbrake wire could be shorting to live anywhere on the car.

Next would be to unplug the clocks and see what happens. Hows the wiring going to the brake fluid resiviour?
